Can these subjects be separate? This is a fascinating subject to me because so many are drawn to the paranormal. You have scientist and clergy reaching across the isle so to speak and working together to try to understand what is going on in a haunted location. And you have many people with very different belief systems in a common goal of trying to figure things out. Personally I believe that every system of belief is correct for that person. How can anyone say there is only one way. It comes down to what your strength of faith is. And that would be correct for you. In short it gives us the opportunity to exercise tolerance and I personally believe that is what is most important. I just think that the paranormal has brought many people together who might not have done so. All with the common goal of understanding and or helping the person in a situation that could be uncomfortable or frightening to them. Look at our TV shows on the paranormal. You have TAPPS who approach in a strictly scientific method. Then Paranormal State who have used clergy and sensitives. Both bring results and new evidence to the field, so both work. Tolerance and acceptance help to bridge the gap that has gone on for centuries on the battle of religion. I am not naive enough to think it solves all the problems, I'm just saying it's a beginning point of tolerance and we need more of that. Both sides can learn from each other if we open ourselves to all possibilities. Science can explain some things and Spirituality can quiet the poltergeist. We need each other, and we can all gain some understanding in the mean time. We are all connected and in this world together.
Spending some time surfin' the web, and found sites regarding skeptics. It occured to me that maybe some of the skeptics may have a "gift" of being able to block other peoples "gifts" People that have had many experiences of sensitivity have had unexplainable inability to use that sensitivity around these people. Whether it would be considered negative attitudes, or energy, these people were still left with out the sensitivity they had when not around the skeptics. Of course they were labeled as fakes and dismissed, while some of the sensitives may have less than honorable motives, surely not all of them. Personally I think it would take some courage to come forward to say you have unexplainable ability. This is just one on my random thoughts, and of course there is no proof.
It's amazing what death makes you think of .................
I'm not trying to be morbid, but when the routine of our normal lives is interrupted by the contemplation of death, the mind tries to find some comfort. My husband and I are faced with a difficult decision regarding our 11 year old Australian Shepherd. She has been diagnosed with bladder cancer. So as we make our way through these heartbreaking decisions, we rely on our beliefs of faith. So then I get to thinking about spirit life, and it makes me wonder. What if we're the ghosts? What if you could zip anywhere you wanted to by simply thinking about it. And what if you had control of your entire brain, I've read that we only use a small percentage of it. What if you could go to a place of paradise with no pollution, no death or pain, and the ability to create any type of art you wanted. Read and study any information you wanted and never forget things. And then if we thought about those we left behind we are suddenly with them, but they are in a different form than us. And you try to communicate but they don't always hear you and don't really listen or they run away scared. Personally I believe we would have understanding of our differences and have a peace about us. But if we turn around our thinking, it's really not that much of a stretch to imagine. We could be the ghosts trapped in our clay bodies and they just stop by to cheer us on. I realize that we all have free will, and that generalizations don't work. Each of us has our own belief as to what the after life might be like. But if we dare to think outside the box, sometimes we can find comfort there.
When I'm introduced to someone, I always make a point of shaking hands. This is not just because the gesture is customary politeness, it also is generally a good pointer to what sort of person is in front of me. Is the hand that takes mine warmly welcoming, or does it feel more like I'm being handed a damp fish to hold? Or worse: is it (the sort I dislike the most) one of those vice-like grips that clamps on fast, not to my whole hand, but just to my fingers and knuckles, and then proceeds to squeeze them like some kind of lemon press? Well, I'm sure that others reading this have had such experiences as these. Shaking hands by way of introduction is, after all, standard to our culture, and apparently originated as a right-handed gesture of friendliness to demonstrate that neither party could, at that critical moment of first encounter, draw his sword against the other (which would have given a staunch left-hander like me a definite advantage!).
But in all the times that I have shaken hands with someone, and of all the hands which have shaken mine, none have felt the same, nor have left such an impression upon me, as my experience of a few nights ago. There I was, lying in bed, just drifting in the darkness somewhere between being not really awake, but definitely not being fully asleep either, with my right hand trailing outside the covers over the side of the bed, as a hand trails in the water from a moving boat. In less time than it will take me to write this sentence, I felt my hand being suddenly taken and grasped, and I was one hundred percent fully awake and staring at my hand in a flash of time. The whole sensation lasted only a brief second or two, but no-one - and I mean really no-one - can tell me that it was ‘just a dream', or that I had ‘just imagined it', or other such phrases intended reassuringly to make us doubt the reality of such encounters with the unknown.
It happened. That's it. Something both unseen and unknown gripped my hand and held it just long enough to make me totally aware that it had occurred. Now, I know what you're probably wondering: what kind of a ‘handshake' was it? Was it a presence that felt reassuring, perhaps even ‘welcoming'? Or was it a fish, or maybe a lemon press? Well, even the brief seconds that it lasted were still long enough for me to identify the type. It was a lemon press. Lately I've tended to sleep with my hands under the covers. - Davy -

Today, February 12th, 2009, is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birthday. The occasion is being marked in various ways internationally, so this blog is my own small contribution to that commemoration.
Darwin's fantastic voyage on the 'Beagle', and his sojourn on the islands of the Galapagos which laid the practical groundwork for his ideas, has become the stuff of scientific legend. And the theory of evolution which is Darwin's landmark contribution, both to science in particular and to human knowledge in general, is now so widely applied in so many fields of science, that the simple notion that something evolves has become entrenched in our general consciousness; even to the extent that we now even think of an idea as 'evolving' from a raw and private first thought to a more fully-formed topic of conversation that we can discuss with others.
Well, Darwin's theory, which deals mainly with new species in the natural world, is clearly too vast for this blog. So I thought instead that I would use this space to do a little off-the-wall Darwinian-style speculation of my own.
Great thinkers whose ideas have changed our perception of our world have appeared in the past, and so it's a given that they will appear again in the future, even if their names are now unknown to us. Fast-forward to 2059. A brilliant young physicist is out for an evening stroll. The winter stars are crisp and bright, and seem unusually close. The scientist has been pondering the quantum problem of how to fold space into time, and so gain access to other dimensions. Overhead in the darkness a meteor streaks across the night, and suddenly, in that after-image of light which the meteor's path has traced, the scientist comes to a new human understanding.
All phenomena occupy their own frequencies within space-time, like different radio stations on a dial. The revelation is profound, and the consequences which flow from this insight are immense. Within the year, the scientist has a working prototype of the chronographic analog modulator (the CAM, as it has come to be known). Differences between the natural world and things which had previously been considered as 'paranormal', and therefore largely beyond the borders of science, become meaningless. All such phenomena are now perceived as belonging to a radiant whole, and human awareness extends into new worlds beyond the limited spectrum of previous understanding.
For simply by tuning the CAM in to the appropriate dimensional frequency, apparitions become visible at will, as do UFO's and other previously-elusive phenomena. New skills must still be learned before we can communicate effectively with these beings. But that will come. This as-yet unknown scientist, whoever he or she might be, will have opened a door just as momentous as the door which Darwin opened onto new knowledge exactly two centuries ago, and we will embark upon yet another fantastic voyage of human understanding. - Davy -

It's unusual to hear scientist refer to God, but here we are with scientists and their new toy, the fully functional Hadron Collider in Ithaca. One might ask them self what are they really looking for? One of the answers to that question is GOD. What! You ask? Yes they are looking for the God particle. God it seems in the scientific community is referred to as the Higgs boson particle. To understand it in simple terms one must think of the universe as a mirror and on one side is us and our atoms. On the other side is an exact copy of a smaller but heavier particle. The collider will momentarily remove a particle's magnetism by aligning its magnetic fields in a way as to cancel each other out allowing us to see into the atom farther than ever before. Possible letting us see into other dimensions or realities. And there in lies the Higgs Boson (The God Particle) a new particle and a means to a microscopic worm hole of infinitesimal size but there none the less allowing us to see that God is in all of us. Something most of us already knew... I think this concept is called faith.
So what are the scientists really looking for at Ithaca? It seems that they are no different than your average ghost hunter looking for portals to the other side. But in this case they have the funds and some awesome tools to achieve their goal. ~michael~

This blog is going to be a little different than what I usually write. It's not so much about my pet peeves, but more of a thought experiment and an opportunity for everyone, including myself, to have a little bit of personal introspection.
I'm going to start off with motivation. Why do you do what it is that you do? I'm not talking specifically about why you're involved in the paranormal field, but what you do in your life in general. I'm only going to use the paranormal as an example because it is one of my passions.
So, why did you get involved in the paranormal field? Did you have a personal experience and are truly looking for answers to an incident that perplexes you or had a profound impact on your life? Are you trying to outright prove the existence of paranormal phenomena? Or are you trying to outright disprove the existence of paranormal phenomena? Are you looking for a thrill, maybe a little excitement and a good scare once in a while? Do you truly want to advance the field of paranormal science? Are you being altruistic and sincerely want to help others experiencing paranormal phenomena? Have you seen the proliferation of paranormal programming on the television and radio (both internet and broadcast) and thought that's what you want to do? Do you think the paranormal will be an avenue to fame and fortune? Do you just need personal validation or need your ego stroked? There isn't necessarily anything wrong with any singular one of these motivations or combination of these motivations in and of themselves.
So take a couple of minutes, mentally step outside of yourself and look inward. Don't worry, I'll wait. I want you to picture how others might view you, based on what you say and what you do. Are your true motivations more visible externally than you thought they were? Perhaps, what you are saying and what you are doing aren't in sync. It's alright. It's very common for the motivations one professes to others and the perception of those same people regarding your motivation be different.
Also tgake the time to look at your basic personality traits. I believe that they are many times a visible indicator of one's deep seated conscious or even unconscious motivation. Are you a generally happy person? A glass half empty or a glass half full type of person? Be honest, you're only lying to yourself if you're not taking an honest look. Do you need conflict and drama to feel fulfilled? Do you feel that you can and are accomplishing your goals and dreams in a decent and ethical manner, or are you accomplishing your goals and dreams by any means necessary, at the expense of others? Are you appreciative of the gifts, talents and successes of others, or does the green-eyed monster rule? (And why is jealousy called the green-eyed monster?)
Remember that none of this is directed at anyone in particular. I was talking with a friend the other day and the subject of personal motivations came up in the conversation. And it got me to thinking about my own persoanl motivations. I've spent a lot of time and thought energy on the since then, and have come to some conclusions that I'd like to share with those of you that are still reading. And for my example I'm going to use the paranormal field and my radio show as my examples, because they are two of my passions.
I grew up with the belief that what we term the paranormal exists. In my upbringing it was a given. I even had experiences that I could term paranormal. They they didn't really effect my day to day life. But in 1991 I had an experience that caused a profound paradigm shift for me. And because I wanted answers, nay, I needed answers. Answers for myself and answers the I hoped would quench my now passionate interest in the paranormal. Being raised in a Christian household, it was a matter of faith in my belief in an afterlife of some sort. But was there more than what I had been taught? I had a burning desire to know more. Remember that this was in the days before the advent of the internet. networking with others was for the most part limited to being with those that were in close geographic proximity. Books and magazines becam required reading for me. I wanted to know the thoughts and theories of others. Applying critical thinking, some made sense, others were beyond left field. But everything I read and heard allowed me to grow. At the time I never considered myself a ghost hunter or paranormal investigator. I was just one man looking for answers and the truth. To this was my motivation for becomeing involved in the paranormal field. What was your motivation for becoming involved in the paranormal field?
Are you a member of an organized paranormal team or are you part of a collective group of friends who enjoy doing the same thing? Be honest with yourself.
I realized that I couldn't learn all that I wanted on my own. I needed the help of others. I also didn't have the skill set needed to learn and monitor the things I wanted. So I began working with others. It was an informal relationship at first, based on a mutual interest. But I needed more structure. My personal life is pretty structured. I realized that a dedicated team of people, possessing skills and knowledge that I didn't have, would be far more advantageous to my personal pursuit of knowledge and I was hopeful that an organized group environment would help the other members in their own personal pursuit of knowledge. I also realized that friendships and a sense of camaraderie would be goof for me on a personal level. Our (mine and other team members) motivation for being involved in a structured team was a more advantageous environment to grow and learn. And we learned early on that our collective knowledge, skills and critical thinking abilities could possible help others with their paranormal experiences. What are your motivations for leading or being on a paranormal investigative team?
Do you have a paranormal themed magazine, webcast, radio show or television show? Why did you become involved in one or more of these meduims? Look at yourself honestly. Was it for fame, money and self-gratification? Or was it another reason. I'm not saying that if one of your goals is to put a couple of bucks in your pocket or a little bit of recognition or notoriety is necessarily a bad thing. As long as that isn't your primary motivator then you're probably ok. If this is the case, what is your primary motivation and why? If you think I'm going to be hypocritical because I do a radio show, I'm not. And I'll explain why. Are you still being honest with yourself? Good.
When I and my co-host, Scotty, decided to do a loosely paranormal themed internet radio show, we didn't expect anything. All we had was the hope that our team name would be brought out a little in our local area, providing us with more cases and opportunities to learn, explore and hopefully help others. In this way we have succeeded to a degree. We listened to what a lot of shows were offering to their listeners. I believe that whatever meduim you are using, be it radio, television, magazines, etc. you should look at what you do as art. We normally reserve classifying something as art in a traditional sense, sculpture, drawing, painting writing and music. But the meduims we use should be classified as art, because to do it well, you need to be creative and not a carbon copy of what someone else does. You have to put part of yourself, your artistic soul into it. Since I use the meduim of radio, it will be my example.
We want to entertain, bring some laughter to people who might possibly really need it. For us, it's art. Not just flipping a switch and talking. You have to offer production value for the people that are taking the time to do you the favor of listening to what you have to say. It's a heady responsibility. And one does need to responsible about how you craft your art. Otherwise you run the risk of being an imitator of someone else or just appear bitter. That's not good for your art and it's not good for your psyche. What is your motivation? We needed to be entertaining, because there are a lot of shows out there and in our short attention span culture; another show is just a click away for the people you're hoping to reach. I believe that if you look at what you do as art, and also look at your primary motivation for doing it, and there is a certain purity of why you are doing what you are doing, then a small degree of notoriety and maybe even a few extra bucks might come your way. Notice I said might. I'm going to be honest with you. Chances are you will never become a household name. Are you ok with that? I am, because it wasn't my motivation. Having fun, entertaining people and sharing my chosen art form, along with getting cases for my team were my motivations.
I apologize for the length of this post. And I thank your for sticking with it. Remember that I'm not singling anyone out. I'm just propsing a thought experiment and I did this after a conversation with a friend. I believe it helped me and I hope that if you honestly participate in this personal experiment, it will help you also. I also found out that I truly love what I am doing. You will too if it's for the right reasons. Apply it to everything in your life, not just the paranormal. i think that if we all take the time to do this once in a while, we just might become better people. And that would be a good thing for everyone.
Thanks for reading and take care.
Although I like to think of this site as a sort of base of operations, I do contribute to other websites. One of these is Scientific American, and when I saw an article on their site on the subject of visitations from the deceased, I naturally jumped right in! The author of the article proposed that the frequently-reported cases of the bereaved experiencing visits from the recently-deceased were in fact caused by the grieving mind, as it were, supplying the reassuring 'visit' that it needed for its own emotional comfort. In short: these experiences can all be put down to hallucinations.
Browsing through the comments that had previously been posted in response to this article made illuminating reading. Many (in fact, most) supplied their personal experiences whose circumstances refuted the author's conclusions. Some were even openly scoffing of the arrogance of someone who sought to dismiss all such experiences as mere fancies of the mind. Here is my own experience:
I was sitting on the porch of a European holiday chalet when I was overwhelmed by the feeling that my father, from whom I had become estranged, and who lived half a world away in Australia, had just died. Four months later I learned from my sister (who herself had just learned) that he had indeed died four months previously, at the time that I felt the event. Since I was not experiencing grief at the time, I could not have been, as it were, mentally primed for this event. In fact, my thoughts were simply with the holiday situation in which I then found myself. Given that this incident was emotional rather than a visual 'hallucination' did not make it less real, and neither, I am sure, is such an experience unique to myself. Science (at least, good science) proceeds by exercising humility in the face of the unknown. - Davy -
This is my poll question and the results have been 100% for yes. So what is this about ? Why do so many become put off or even angry when confronted with paranormal investigations. Is it because they just don't understand or agree with the possibility of the paranormal? Or does it have more to do with religious belief.
While some of the responses could be from personal experience, For some people, maybe they have had a negative paranormal experience that scared them and so now they choose to separate them selves from all things paranormal. While others may fall into a "search it out until I find it" frame of mind. Unfortunately not everyone wants to talk about it.I think some of this has to do with our religious upbringing. From my own experiences I can say that it seems a great fear of demons or dark entities play a part. From my Mother saying "why do you have to mess with all that stuff" to total strangers giving me the look. You know the look that says I don't know you or what your about so get as far away from me as possible look. I've seen that look a lot lately. We as a people really do send many mixed messages. And it seems we have many mixed beliefs. Right now I work in a campground in southern Georgia. Heart of the Bible belt I am told, so how come this campground is totally decorated with all things Halloween? We have been full to capacity and the groups that camp together have even gone to the extreme of fighting amongst them selves over the Halloween decorations and celebrations. The fighting has lead this group to split and now go to separate campgrounds. Not to mention the amount of money spent on decorations ( this place is unreal )
So maybe that is in itself our answer, this issue is just to complicated to be dealt with comfortably so we end up getting the cold shoulder. For those of us who are brave enough to look into the face of the unknown and say, hey, just what exactly is going on here, the others will either continue to call us crazy or brave. Either way it's good to have a second home, a Paranormal House.
If I asked you to imagine a thingamajig, you might have some trouble coming up with a mental picture. But if I asked you to imagine a pink and purple spotted elephant you could picture that in your mind. So on this thought how did ancient civilization create the hieroglyphics that represent the obvious alien influence. A trip to Google with alien hieroghlyphics brings many responses of pictures and professional opinions. The subject varies from the building of pyramids, flying machines to aliens themselves. In my opinion there has to be something to it because of the distance between these places, and the monumental task of building the pyramids themselves.
Some believe that we are seeded from the extratrestials, I believe that this enters into the subject of religion and creation, personally I believe if we were created then why not others. Some may even say that Angels could take on any visage they wanted. All of these questions stretch our minds and make us move forward in our development and keeping an open mind to many possibilities to help us grow. And that may be the motivation that brought them here in the first place. We as people have grown in technology at break neck speed. So the questions may be, if we reach a point in technology will they come back ? Or have they ever really left us.

You're lying in bed. Maybe you've been reading a book before settling down for the night. Well, the bed's nice and warm, and maybe your partner has already headed off for slumberland. You're about to turn out the light, when you notice that a closet door has been left ajar. What do you do? I mean, it's only open just a little way, after all. But in some funny way this 'only open a little' is more bothersome than if it were plain old wide open.
So what's in the shadow of that opening? Maybe memories of when you were a kid, and the dark interiors of closets were pretty much the number one favored places for monsters to lurk (apart, of course, from under the very bed in which you happened to be lying). Especially after Mum or Dad had wished you 'goodnight' and turned out the light, and you were left in the sudden flood of darkness as you listened to their footsteps going downstairs, like they were off to some distant planet and wouldn't hear you, no, not even if you screamed your lungs out for them to come and rescue you.
What else could be in that long crack of shadow are other sorts of memories: scenes from thriller movies that you've seen which, without exception, have served only to reinforce the fact that half-open closet doors are the worst kind of bad news, and that the heroine (who is always somehow, and quite inexplicably, totally alone in the sort of house that no sane soul would ever think even of entering) just has to (equally inexplicably) go to investigate further. Cue the sort of shock cut that makes the popcorn hit the movie theater ceiling.
So there you are lying in bed (remember?), looking at that sliver of shadow in the opening between the closet door and its dark interior. Would I get up to close it? Haha - that's for me to know and you to guess. Would you get up to close it? Well, now you can exercise your democratic voice and vote on the issue in my poll! - Davy -

Off we go Peeps......Don't know if we'll catch more then some stunning photos but lets keep our fingers crossed hey?! LOL

( Photos obtained from Yahoo.com photos)
This should be a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Part 2
Cynthia and I began our investigation in the James Garfield Memorial and crypt. We didn't really feel anything out of the ordinary. Photos and Tape recorder offered no abnormal phenomina, but it was breath taking inside. The archetecture was unreal. Of course he was a President so I'd expected nothing less.....

The stained glass is all original and was made by 'The' Mr. Tiffany. As you can tell already, light glare was a big issue inside for photos.

The hisorical society manned the front desk.

Did I move? LOL

Bottom half of everything is marble.

All Marble.

"Hello Can I take your picture?"

Mr and Mrs. Garfield and then the urns are their only child, a daughter, and her husband.

Back upstairs we go....We will assend to the floors bove the moument and the main hall.

There are many little off stairways that aren't open to the public along the way...*sniff I sure wanted in there!*

Looking down now on the monument.

Ok up we go one more level to the oustside obsevation deck.

Ahhh fresh air and the Cleveland sky line in the distance.

OK going back down...

One more look around....

Hearse entrance to the crypt.

We decided to just walk around in the section right next to the Garfield monument because we could see some real interesting markers and memorial stones.

To be continued...............
Part 2
We continued along the ajoining Lot....

Light glare was awefull...and did I move?

I wonder what the wing means? An Angels wing?

To many recognized sir names! Alot of research to do to see who exactly they were!

Wonder if this guy is from plymoth rock?

I have to be moving or something!

So many crypts it reminded me of pictures of New Orleans.

hmmmm

Around this one I was made to feel a great and never ending love. Was probable power of suggestion.

Trying to look through the glass on a crypt

Then there was the dam...
such as it was.......

This area made me feel...unsettled...but no recorded evidence of anything ..paranormal was obtained.

We thought it was cool that the original roads could be seen under the pavement in some places it was also strange the way they up ended the stopne to pave instead of laying the flat ends up.

Then we found what I was looking for The Stone! THis thing looks like it's crying blood but in fact is oxidation of the bronze. It makes you feel ......hard to explain!

More crypts

Then we visited the chapel...closing in 5 minutes

I see an orb! Is it dust?
Off to find Elliot Ness....

Here we go...We were told that he isn't barried here. He was cremated and then tossed into the lake you see behind Cynthia there.

I was expecting...I don't know...something bigger?!

Then right inside the gate we found the other grave that I have long wanted to visit.
Can't tell you the deep sorrow that overcame me around this memorial. Behind it is a short line of a couple of individual graves of the children and then a break in the bushes going over to a young mans grave that died in vietnam. I felt sick to my stomach in that area, but again caught nothing on voice recorder nor camera.

There is much research to be done on the famous people laid to rest here. This is one of the first cemetaries in Cleveland and most of our local founding Fathers are laid to rest here. We couldn't find them all and there were to many Rockefellers in this place to know for sure which is the famous guy but it'll give me something to do this winter! lol. We must go back because we weren't able to see even half of the 260 plus acres! It's to bad the place closes and locks the gates before dark! They do hold haunted tours during the Halloween season maybe I'll check that out. THis place is reputed to be haunted but other then a few Feelings We captured no evidence of this on our visit. This doesn't mean it isn't, Just didn't want to play with us! lol

"Is there anybody out there?". When *Pink Floyd sing these words, they convey all the anguished alienation of our times. We gaze up at the stars in the night sky, and perhaps the same question runs through our mind. But the context alters the question, and this time the words convey longing and a sense of wonder. Is there anybody ‘out there'? The truth is, we do not know, but science and recent advances in astronomy have shown us planets orbiting stars. And as each star is a sun, then there must exist planets without number, scattered throughout island galaxies in a universe containing too many such galaxies to count.
But if life exists elsewhere than on our home planet, what forms does this life take? Right here on Earth there are bacteria known as ‘extremophiles' - forms of life that not only survive, but live in such extreme conditions, such as in the cores of nuclear reactors, or in the boiling sulphur vents of Yellowstone, that to think of life as being only possible in benign conditions has become meaningless.
But what we really mean when we look up at the stars is: "Is there anybody out there?" We are not looking for extremophiles or bacteria. We are looking for another us - intelligent beings with whom we can communicate, with whom we can connect, with whom we can share experiences. So.. is there anybody out there? No direct evidence has yet been found, but the statistics of probability are - literally - astronomically in favor of there being so. Let's take the utmost conservative estimate and rate the chances at a negligible one in a million. Checking this off against the known (and only the known) star systems, these odds still mean that the number of planets capable of producing life are a staggering ten billion! Using this odds-against method of calculation, this in turn means that the number of actual advanced civilisations in our own local Milky Way galaxy could still be some ten thousand!
Rewind to the year 1600. In a tower in Rome the Dominican Giordano Bruno is awaiting trial for *heresy. His years of accumulating extraordinary and enlightened insights into many spheres of learning during his wanderings through Europe have drawn his maverick views to the attention of the Church authorities; a dangerous thing to happen in times that already are dangerous enough. It is the seventh year of his incarceration. He is given the chance to recant his views, but with resolution and extraordinary personal courage, he refuses. He is then tortured in ways too terrible to be mentioned here, and is finally burnt at the stake in a specific way which ensures the prolonging of his Earthly sufferings. Of the various ‘heresies' which he declines to recant is the key issue of his unshakable belief that the stars are not fixed in the firmament, but actually are bodies like our own sun, with their own planets on which life flourishes; a daring vision, unique for its time, of a fecund and densely-populated cosmos.
Is there anybody out there? I'm sure that there is. There really are just so many stars. And I'm equally sure that, somewhere, one of those stars is shining for the soul of Giordano Bruno. - Davy -

(I thought I'd write this blog, my first for this year, as my modest contribution to mark 2009 as being International Astronomy Year!)
I was watching this Horror Movie and realized it was filmed at The Waverly!!
Supposed to be a true story?
It is still playing as I type. I had to do the research! You guys know me how curious I can be and compulsive as to research. Anyway, here is the link to the movie particulars!.............................Johnb

Heresies. There the word was, staring back at me as one of my listed interests in my own member profile. I'd just written it there, and as can happen, it seems that actually writing the word down was enough to confront me with the subject. What did I mean? And, of course, what do heresies themselves mean? Mostly when we hear the word, it tends to invoke visions of such things as the Inquisition, and (as shown in the picture) poor Galileo being forced by the Church authorities to recant on threat of torture his shockingly heretical idea that the Earth actually revolved around the sun, and was not at the fixed center of the universe after all. Well, that is a well-documented historical instance of heresy, but it also makes the point that the heresies of one age tend to become the orthodoxies of the next, as also shown by the way in which the fledgling faith of Christianity itself began as a heresy among the pantheon of plentiful Roman gods.
But the struggle to transform heretical beliefs into orthodox acceptance is not always won. Some members might recall my postings on the previous site about the heretical pharaoh Akhnaten, who introduced history's first one-god-only religion. After the pharaoh's death, the new temples and the worship of the one true Aten both collapsed into ruin, unable to sustain themselves on the too-youthful and short-lived shoulders of his son Tutankhamun on the one hand, and the slighted and embittered priests of the old ways on the other.
And those slighted priests offer us another insight into heresies. Who, in fact, actually decides what is heretical, and what is orthodox? My own readings on the subject persuade me that, often enough, such weighty decisions can even come down to factors of chance, or have at their roots a person or persons whose motives have more to do with the consolidation of their own power base than with a sincere striving after what is ‘true' or ‘right'. Why does the New Testament now have only four Gospels? There once were many more, so what happened to them? Why is there no mention whatever of any of the Great Pyramid's more mysterious aspects in the official guidebooks, which insist on describing it simply as a pharaoh's tomb, despite the fact that no murals or heiroglyphs depicting funerary rites have ever been found in it?
For the battle between heresies and accepted ways of thinking is broader than religious faiths, and extends into the sciences and other fields of study. FreeSpirit's and Deber's recent polls show clearly enough that at least some of this site's members have encountered prejudice in their investigations of the paranormal. Is that so surprising? To science, and to many sober-minded folks, the ‘paranormal' still is a heresy, after all. But maybe that in itself is reason for hope. Heresies are themselves defined by what is orthodox - and exactly what is accepted as ‘orthodox', as history shows us, is very much a shifting frontier. And heresies are just as likely - heck, sometimes more likely - to be as true as the accepted ‘truth'.
- ‘Proud to be a Heretic' Davy -
This blog entry is already longer than I planned, but here are a couple of extra thoughts: I've mentioned that heresies can change into orthodoxies, but it does not seem to be cyclic. In other words: orthodoxies do not revert to being heresies again. What seems to happen is that orthodoxies are discarded, or become downgraded to eccentric minority views, as new heretical ideas push their way through into general acceptance. And: it's heretics themselves who fascinate me as much as their heresies. Names from history such as *Hypatia and Giordano Bruno offered their lives for their principles. With exceptional personal courage, they chose to swim against the current of their times and paid a terrible price. Bruno's story is indeed a stirring one, and I could well drop his name again in my blogs.
*Hypatia of Alexandria, who in the 4th-5th centuries dared to practice what she preached: namely, that women were as capable of higher learning as men.
Hello again, seekers!
I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and have a great New Year, too. I am working on some things, and will try to get MESA going again in the new year. I still need to measure a lot of places that are NOT haunted for control data. I want to thank everyone for the support.

The pen, they always say, is mightier than the sword. To keep the famous idiom moving with the times, let's presume that 'pen' also means 'keyboard'. After all, most of us now do our writing with a computer rather than by wielding a Parker, other than perhaps briefly to add our signature to a letter which itself has been written with a word processor and printed out as a hard copy.
I'm prompted to these thoughts because it is now exactly a year since I expanded my own Internet horizons beyond Paranormal House to post on other sites. And rather more by circumstance than through any specific game plan on my part, these other postings have come to concentrate upon the defence of scientific knowledge against minority (but vociferous!) religious fringe groups such as creationism. The Internet is a great leveller. You can be built like Schwarzenegger, but in cyberspace it doesn't mean squat. All that counts is how informed you are, and how succinctly you can argue your case. When writing is all that you have, then what you write is everything.
This blog is not the place to go into what I say in such postings, but the point is made that in such situations, my keyboard is my 'sword'. Still, that having been said, if I mention that the only martial art that has my attention is Iaijutsu, then there seems to be more involved here than just penmanship. Iaijutsu is the defensive art of the *katana (the traditional Japanese samurai sword), with emphasis on the correct manner of drawing and returning the weapon to its saya (scabbard). This is executed in a series of movements as ritualized as a tea ceremony, and when performed by a master, is as fluid to watch - and as stunning - as a perfect Olympic high dive.
So on the one hand, you have the power of the written word, and on the other, the movement of the blade. The first is essentially a cerebral activity. The other, seemingly all physical action. So the question is: what is the link, if any, between the two? Well, Iaijutsu, being Eastern, is bound up with an inner mystique that plays little part in Western swordsmanship. It is considered the supreme achievement of this art to defeat your opponent, not through any accomplished slicing and dicing, but without even needing to draw your weapon in the first place! The total poise, confidence and inner strength that the master projects makes any blade-crossing redundant, and no clash of steel ensues. This ideal state is expressed by the phrase: "victory comes while the sword is still in the scabbard".
So is the pen mightier than the sword? While I'm not entirely sure that my writing has much impact upon my swordplay, the focussed economy and purpose of the actions in Iaijutsu definitely imbue my writing. Am I going to tell you the way in which I use the specific techniques of Iaijutsu to underscore my Internet posting? Of course I'm not! After all, Paranormal House might be a pretty safe place, but the Internet can be a dark and isolated back-country road. And to be honest, if I really were in a tight spot somewhere on such a real road, I'd more likely prefer to reach for my katana than for the ballpoint in my breast pocket!
- Davy -
*Although the details are beyond the scope of this blog, a classic original katana (which is way beyond my budget!) is considered to be an object of art in its own right, and the supreme expression of the swordsmith's craft from any country or any period in history. Even the tsuba, or hand guard, is regarded as a collector's item in itself, and offers designs as unique as they are original. If anyone's interested, just Google image search 'tsuba', and you'll see what I mean!
I thought I'd add this note just in case anyone might be wondering.. no, Iaijutsu is definitely not just a guy thing! Women excel at it. I've even seen a video of a fourteen-year old Filipino girl demonstrating her Iaijutsu skills that just has to be seen to be believed! Phenomenal..
I am the sad ghost hunter, I have a new electronic gizmo and no haunted location to use it in. Ok so given the worlds problems it's pretty low on the list. But still, for the last two months I have been searching for a new location to investigate. I even presented myself to the local collage for paranormal investigations. No response. I find it hard to believe that a collage built in the 1800 would have absolutely no ghosts. So being from Ohio and trying to fit in to a southern Georgia town, a ghost hunter has to ask themselves, am I doing something wrong here? Maybe the southern folk don't want some stranger in there talking to their ghosts? Out of frustration, we went to a small cemetery that is listed on the haunted location and all we got was burrs on our pants. Oh yeah and the excitement of dogs chasing us on the motorcycle while we found the place in the dark. I figure at least we tried. Well life has a way of taking funny turns. Dan and I have been discussing buying land in Alabama. So I am doing research on line and I find this
linkhttp://www.ghostsofamerica.com/3/Alabama_Roanoke_ghost_sightings2.html
Heck if half of the info on this site is even close to being something, the new county we're moving to will definitely have some possibilities. And yeah Deb we will have a spot for you when you visit!
All this got me to thinking, and maybe this is a question for the polls. Have you ever been treated differently because of this hobby, or felt that people thought less or negatively towards you because of this hobby? Personally I don't care either but it sure does slow down the offers to investigate something beside an outside location. In the mean time I'll be working on the map to find some of the locations listed on the website. And I guess I'll just start poking around because someone had to be the first to find the other haunted locations. And I can't stay sad for long.
Some ten years ago now I was enthralled by a B.B.C. documentary. The subject was the famed crystal skulls of presumed Aztec origin. Indeed, I remember seeing the one on display in London's Museum of Mankind, the anthropology branch of the British Museum. There's no denying the charisma of the thing, whose glittering depths seem to trap and hold a mysterious power. These several skulls, carved from pure rock crystal little smaller than life-size, were brought together from their varying collections for the first time by the makers of the program. And as I recall, their owners/custodians spoke of feeling in the presence of some force when the skulls had been placed in a circle facing each other.
Among those present was a psychic who was invited to use her special gifts to see what one of the skulls could 'tell' her. She took the skull in her hands and seemed to slide into a semi-conscious trance state, and after a minute or so of deep breathing, began to speak in a slurred, drifting voice. The skull, she reported, had originally been made by shaman priests, was very old, and had been polished smooth with hanks of human hair. In this and other telling details, it was a memorable session, and I was left with the impression that whatever the truth, the psychic herself believed in what she had 'learned' from the skull.
But science, and the methods and techniques used for examining such artefacts, moves on. Yesterday evening I watched a new documentary on the crystal skulls. More sophisticated electron microscopes and dating methods are now at our disposal, and in the last few weeks these have told us conclusively that the skulls are forgeries, carved with modern grinding and cutting tools between the last half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth. And as if this was not in-your-face proof enough, the source of the crystal is not even Mexican.
I believe that one should follow the truth, wherever that truth might lead - even if that means disillusionment and disappointment at the end of the path. But the human spirit also needs mysteries. We still do not know who carved the skulls, nor with what motive. And there are those who cling still to the idea that the skulls' sophisticated non-Aztec manufacture must surely point to their origins lying in unknown older cultures of presumed lost knowledge such as Atlantis, or even in sources extraterrestrial, rather than in some secretive back-of-the-shop outfit looking to make a killing on the curio market.
And what of the psychic who supplied such convincing details of the skull's history
in the original documentary? I have little doubt that she believed the truth of what she herself said. But do we believe something because we wish it to be true? How does this impact what we believe about the paranormal? And the skulls have a last quirky mystery: by chance I discovered that when I changed the photo of the British Museum skull to a negative, a spookily ‘real' skull appeared. - Davy -
Having written my article about cellphone cameras (see ‘When Phones Become Cameras'), I found that I was bothered by something. What bothered me was a thought that has been bothering me for some time, and it's simply this: why should it be that ghosts and other apparitions show up on a camera, when we apparently don't see them at the time - even when they seem to be standing right next to the person we are photographing? I sure don't have the answer, but one or two things do occur to me.
One huge difference between a camera and an eye is that the eye is attached to a human brain, which interprets, filters - even blocks out - the information which our eyes send it, and perhaps which it knows we ‘can't handle'. The camera, on the other hand, is a mere passive machine. It has no awareness of what it ‘should' or ‘should not' be seeing. It just does its job and faithfully records what is in front of the lens. This is one line of thought, but maybe there's a time issue going on here as well. The camera's shutter trips at speeds of up to a thousandth of a second. Do paranormal phenomena operate in dimensions where such slivers of time mean nothing - or are even stretched out in ways which we in our own time cannot understand?
One thing for sure is that the phenomena that show up on cameras are clearly aware of what they are doing. By golly, some of the photos which I've seen around on the Web make it plain that a ghost was actually posing for the picture with the subject - and enjoying the attention! And think of some of the things that have been caught on the Willard cams (Snickerdoodle comes to mind!). There's definitely a ‘looking at you looking at them' sort of feeling. Ghosts, it would seem, quite enjoy the thought of being in the family album. - Davy -
"Faith which does not doubt is dead faith." This comment by Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno is something of a life's credo for me. But what was de Unamuno wishing to say? He does not specify what kind of faith, so it might mean faith in life, religious or spiritual faith, or faith in general, as a human quality. How often does it happen that we find ourselves in a situation when a decision - even a life-changing one - has to be made, although all the information that we truly need to make that decision is not to hand. And yet the decision must be arrived at. We must then have faith - take it on trust - that our decision will be the right one. Well, as we know, sometimes it's not! But our actions were still guided by faith, and often enough that faith can be - and is - rewarded.
But what about the faith which 'does not doubt'? de Unamuno makes it clear that he considers the exercise of this sort of faith to be unwise - even futile. We see all too clearly in this day and age what happens when religious faith does not doubt itself. The slide towards fanaticism then seems a rapid one, and appalling acts of inhumanity and terror are committed in the name of an undoubting, unquestioning - and unself-critical - 'faith'. The price that we apparently pay for blindly following this kind of unbending faith is the loss of our own common humanity - the very thing that our 'faith' is supposed to make us more aware of.
How does de Unamuno describe this kind of unself-critical faith? To him it's a plain-enough 'dead faith'. We might think of faith which is 'dead' as faith which is no longer believed in, but I'm sure that what de Unamuno meant is more a faith which does not 'live' - a faith which does not grow and evolve, does not question itself, does not.. doubt. And this is the way in which I see this phrase having a direct relevance to the study of paranormal issues. It would seem that, virtually by definition, paranormal phenomena offer little or no hard evidence as 'proof'. So it requires an act of faith to take these things at face value. If a member of one of these forums describes an encounter with such phenomena, we are prepared to have faith in that person's description of what she or he says happened to them. But we do (to use Becca's now-famous word!) ponder what is said. In other words: we like to cover the angles and examine other possibilities to see if other explanations might present themselves. This, too, is doubting, living faith. - Davy -
JULY 30TH 2008
FAIRPORT HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE PAINSVILLE, OHIO.
A very short investigation was completed at the Historical Museum and Lighthouse of Fairport Harbor, Ohio July 30th 2008. Investigators included Cynthia Jerome, Deanna Andres and myself.
We arrived in the quaint little town of Fairport Harbor wich is a suburb to Painsville Ohio, about 2pm. The day was very hot and clear. The lightkeepers house span 2 floors and a crawl space. The only area we were allowed in was the main floor wich today houses a Historic Museum of the light houses history and the history of Lake Erie mostly the Fairport Harbor Area. And the Lighthouse itself. The antiques on display were phenominal and massive. I've not been to one that housed as many original pieces of ships and tools ect pertaining to the old ships and seafarers. It was quite interesting.
We met 2 ladys working the museum, members of the local historical society. They were Very helpfull and pleasent women.
At their suggestion we braved the 96 steps to the top of the lighthouse before browsing and feeling our way through the museum. I must say I surprised my self and actually made it to the top...hurray for me! I didn't really feel anything out of the ordinary but continued to click photos on my digital Vivitar camera. ( still going through data and results to follow)
Deanna manned the digital voice recorder and ran from arrival of the lighthouse through to leaving the property. ( Data still being analized and results to follow)
It was quite breath taking at the top and the breeze off the lake felt wonderfull. On the way back down there was a place on the steps that Cynthia felt somthing amiss and asked me to take photos behind her. ( Pictures to follow).
An addition to the lightkeepers quarters , on the main floor, in the early 1900's is the original wheel cabin from a wooden ship. The air felt dead in there even though there were open doors into the rest of the main floor and that was quite cool with air conditioning. Deanna sat on the box that the Captain would stand on to stear the ship. She became sick to her stomach both times she ventured into the room and said bluntly " I have to leave" then off she went. LOL (recorder in hand I might add...was her first investigation so we'll forgive her LOL)
Cynthia said she also felt something amiss in this area so we took plenty of pictures. I, again, felt like it was Dead in there. Very opressive.
The history of the haunting in the lighthouse and lightkeepers Quarters goes as this........
Built in the mid 1800's the light house guided many ships into harbor and or past the shores of Fairport harbor. They went through just a couple of Light Keepers until the early 1900's when a bigger and better lighthouse was built farther out in the harbor. The lighthouse then fell into disrepair until about the 1940's or so when it was referbished and opened by the Historical society.
A light keeper was housed in the keepers quarters and each one started seeing the ghost of a grey cat in the upstairs of the house.
In the late 1900's the funds were finnaly raise to install central air and further upgrades to the house. In doing so workmen had to go into crawl spaces beneath the house that no one had been into since the stucture was built. The workman found himself laying his head on an object he didn't know what it was right away, upon inspection he found the mummified body of a large house cat.
Aparently the cat either made it's way in and couldn't get out or went in to die. The cat mummy was justification to the current and previous keepers that swore to see a large grey cat even though they didn't own a cat. The perfect mummification is a mystery.
The mummy cat is on display in the light house museum in a sealed glass case. The Historical society is currently running a contest to name the cat. Atop the case a DVD player has been set up to view the segment of AMERICA'S HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSES from the Travel Channel.
Investigator Deanna, not having seen the TV show watched the video and put her vote for the name of Bubby.
(good luck to you Deanna)
Many pictures were obtained of the cat and items in every room of the light house museum. As usual I had to talk so this time instead of asking if I could take their picture I just kept saying......
Here kitty kitty kitty.
...........................................
After going over the entire 50 minutes of tape taken at the site..the only thing heard was 2 affirmations.
#1 towards the end of museum tour I asked Cynthia and Deanna if any location in paticular gave them "strange feelings"
Deanna stated right away that she felt sick in the pilot house room addition section and Cynthia then agreed she felt a little "oppressed in there"
Prior to this Deanna was roaming on her own through the rooms and had in fact stated the room she was in made her feel sick.
#2 After the tour... I was taking pictures of the outside, Cynthia was walking the yard a little and Deanna was sitting right outside the open lighthouse door on a wooden landing. All of a sudden she started complaining about a sharp pain in her back. This was all caught on tape...nothing was captured on film.....I didn't want to scare her so I said lets go across the street and get something to drink. IT took me aback a little....don't know for sure if it was pranormal in nature or not, but, once we got her away from the porch the pain abrubtly stopped and no more was mentioned.
(once I can figure out how to seperate these 2 areas on the tape I will submitt them for your review. The tape itself doesn't seem to do more then verify the pictures and our visit. No Cats were heard.)
PICTURE DOCUMENTATION IN ORDER OF INVESTIGATIVE TOUR EXPERIENCE...............................
The pictures you are about to see are the originals and in order of our tour .........

What is red orb at top left of window?

Investigators Cynthia and Deanna pose at the top.

Light shining through the steps?
Then Cynthia say's "Tke a picture behind me"........

An I got those......same window....no curtain.

Then we went straight to the matter...................

The cat intombed in glss on a slight bed of cotton........................

A trick of the camera? There wasn't any stringy stuff in the bottom front of the case nor any
cotton on top of the case.

Watch out Cynthia is driving! lol
This is the room that we all felt a little ill and oppressed in.

Beautiful!

Light glare?

I then asked if anyone had any unusual feelings about a spacific area in the museum. Deanna stated she got sick in the pilot house addition ( the recorder verified her response to the room alone prior in the visit, Cynthia agreed and we then went back for a sit down....

Then Deanna got sick again and took off with the recorder...lol

The date facts can be reviewed at the light houes web site....I'm off on my dates a bit.
Twas a beautiful day for an investigation near the lake!
this is my dream being on track for once

Those on this site who know the kinds of things that ring my bells will have heard me mention the Nephilim before. In the ancient times before the Deluge, mysterious beings known only as the Watchers, the ‘sons of the gods', looked down from the heavens on high, and seeing the comely ‘daughters of men', descended to our world to party. The results of these unions were the Nephilim, human on their mothers' side, and on their fathers' side... well.. what, exactly?
Quite a body of speculative literature has grown up around this brief but oh-so-intriguing passage from the Book of Genesis. Were the Watchers perhaps all-too-Earthly visitors from a then-less familiar geographical region [1], strangers come from a strange land? Or were they even extraterrestrials visiting our planet to throw a few alien genes into the human mix, as has been speculated on the wilder shores of probability by some credulity-stretching [2] theorists?
There is a third possibility, and that is the Biblical one: that the Watchers were some kind of fallen (literally) angels, who during the long descent from their ethereal heights gradually acquired material bodies the closer to our world they became. But the Genesis account, as I've mentioned, yields only tantalizing glimpses of this episode, more shadows than substance. As with so much in Genesis, one has the feeling that there is more to tell, but that something, somehow, is missing. And it is.
I have just completed reading the [3] Book of Enoch. Enoch, the companionable prophet who was the seventh generation from Adam. Enoch, whose lengthy description of his visit to the heavenly abode is among the finest and most stirring passages of visionary writing that I have come across in literature (and trust me, I've read quite a bit). Enoch, who is the source for much detail that we feel is otherwise missing from Genesis. The identity of the serpent in Eden (and how it came to be there). A description of the actual fruit that hung on the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (it wasn't an apple!) that grew in the Garden. The true cause of the Deluge (the brief reason given in Genesis, that it was ‘the wickedness of men', always did sound to my ears like a not-very-good justification for calling ‘time' on an entire planet). In short, it is the sympathetic voice of the prophet Enoch who supplies so much of the detail that seems to be missing from Genesis.
So where is Enoch? Or rather: where is Enoch's Book? Because (except, curiously, in Ethiopia) it failed to make it into the Biblical canon. The reason, apparently, was that the Church fathers considered aspects of the Book to be heretical, particularly the key question of immaterial angels being able to take on material bodies. And so Enoch hit the cutting room floor. Which I for one consider a tragedy of editing, not just because of the information that without it remains puzzlingly uncertain, but also because the book is frequently referenced, and was clearly known and respected, to the writers of both the Old and the New Testaments. And I can offhand think of at least two other instances in the canonical Bible where angels do indeed take on the bodies of men; or at least, are so indistinguishable from ordinary folk as to be mistaken for them.
So let's look at the situation in reverse, which is in a sense what we do on this site anyway. We are born, we live our lives, and we die. And afterwards? Are some ghosts really sightings of spirits of the departed? And this being so, if material bodies can become immaterial, then why should the reverse not be possible? Was what Enoch was claiming for the Watchers so unimaginable? As I've said before in other entries of this blog, perhaps it is so-called heresies which contain the real truth.
And the Nephilim? Because Enoch certainly provides us with more information about them than their brief mention in Genesis. Haha, another time, perhaps. This blog entry is already way longer than I planned, and on this site, speculation is a virtue. - Davy -
[1] "From the Ashes of Angels", by Andrew Collins. Well-researched and well-expressed original ideas by an author who really knows how to take the reader on a journey, proposing that the Watchers were people from another geographical region.
[2] "The 12th Planet", by Zecharia Sitchin. I realize that Sitchin has a huge fan base, but for my taste his left-field ideas are too easy to disprove. Still, if you like the ‘ancient astronauts' style of speculative theories, then this book will do it for you.
[3] "Fallen Angels and the Origins of Evil", by the aptly-named Elizabeth Clare Prophet. This gem not only contains the complete translated Book of Enoch and other ex-canonical texts, but much additional explanatory material (including all Biblical references to Enoch), and hints at intriguing personal ideas of the author's regarding the continued existence of the Watchers in our own world.
Also: "The Lost Prophet", by Margaret Barker. An excellent short introduction to the material by a recognized Biblical scholar who really knows her subject.
Hello friends,
We will be investigating the Willard Library at 21 First Avenue in Evansville, Indiana, on October 25th, 2008. MESA has some new members, a new website, and a new laptop to sample data! We will also be doing an investigation of the Lincoln Theater in Decatur, IL on October 31st, Halloween, 2008. Joining us in Evansville, Indiana will be the Willard Library Ghost Chatters, PORTAL from Louisville Kentucky, and the Madison Research Into the Paranormal Team from Madison, Wisconsin. It should be a lot of fun.

Hello, friends.
The MESA Dell laptop is being repaired. Therefore, I cannot post results from the Vinegar Hill Mall/Pizza Machine investigation. If it is repaired, I will try to get everything off the hard drive and save it. I am going to have Dave Black load the MESA software onto a new Compaq laptop that was donated to the MESA project.
We do not have any investigations planned at this time. We will be doing a thing in Arcadia, MO on September 26-27, 2008. It is the first AVACON conference.
Thanks for your interest.

Recently I had an internet encounter with a man who said that he was taking his son out of public school and putting him in a private school. The reason? He did not wish his son to learn about evolution because, as he saw things, "If a person in the real world or people prior to evolution being taught in schools aren't affected or less intelligent by not being taught evolution then this proves my point we don't need evolution in our public schools."
I pointed out to him that were he logically to follow through with this argument, then ALL knowledge gained since the mid-19th century should also not be taught in schools! Now, I realise that his reasons for changing his son's school were to do with his own personal conflict between his religious beliefs and the findings of science, but I'm going to leave that side of it for what it is, because the situation he cited does raise another issue: to what extent do we have a moral right deliberately to withhold knowledge from our children?
Of my own two daughters, one is an ordained nun, and the other is an atheist; about as radically different, both from each other and from their dad, as it's possible to get! But I strongly consider that both of them have the right to choose their own path, and should be given the freedom to follow that path. It's not some hypothetical, academic issue. It's to do with real people living their lives as they feel they should, and as they feel they need to. I think that the real freedom of choice is not what the parent chooses for the child (except, of course, when that child is still of tender years), but what the parent allows the child to choose for him- or herself. The right path to follow is the one that we ourselves choose. - Davy -
(A general note: as posting articles on this site does not at the moment include an option for readers to post comments, at Michael's suggestion I'm including both new articles and blogs together in my blog, so that any member can have a fair chance to comment on what I say should they wish to do so!)
One of my guys does a article for our group. If you would like to read it, it can be found here- http://www.nicap.org/pcgh/spooken_word_0807.htm
Jeff, Kelley and I just got back from Mansfield Prison this past weekend. I have to say we were rather disappointed in the place. Don't get me wrong, this place was massive! The cell blocks are HUGE! There were too many people. I felt like i was on a field trip, not a investigation. You could not go anywhere without being on top of another group. There was a lot of talking, a lot of picture taking. They did however provide us unlimited drinks and pizza. I got to see Maer and Chris and had a blast with Kelley and Jeff and we learned to Letterbox!
Aug 2-3rd we go to Waverly Hills! WOOHOO
IMPORTANT NOTICE: I'm using my blog here to warn other members that stella008, weah22, and nora4love are 'honey trap' identities. In fact, they're almost certainly the same person (male), who signs on as a member to send messages to various in-boxes professing romantic attraction, and urging an exchange of emails. Yeah, right. If anyone is rash enough to fall for this, then one or two emails later, they'll casually comment that they need to transfer a large amount of money, and could you please just send your bank account number to receive the transfer? One givaway is that these Internet honey traps are almost always based in Africa. A previous experience of a personal acquaintance of mine alerted me to this practice. I hope this serves as an adequate warning to other on-the-level members. - Davy -
(I have had declarations of love as forwarded Paranormal House emails here from all three above names. So for the record: stella008, weah22, and nora4love: Not only do I have a long and happy marriage, I didn't come down in the last shower of rain either. lol.)
I came in to double-check the link I have on the wlghostchatters.com website, and noticed I could blog, so I'm going to. I finally got into the website yesterday (Yahoo changed all the stuff and I could not figure it out. They are NOT easy to find a phone contact for, so I was floundering in nothing. THEN I had to find them to update my credit card info. If something - even the tiniest thing - blocks me, I'm Procrastinator Par Extraordinaire. I knew I had to do it, so I got started yesterday .. LATE yesterday.. after finally finding a phone number (had to go through emails and clickies and all.. GRRR). I added in some images of Amanda's (Manduh)wedding, and of Mike's (Lestat) wedding. I updated news I knew about from the people I'm still in regular touch wtih (still have more to add in that department), and now I'm trying to go through the front page and get some of those links updated. Finally found some good new admins who are able to put some time to working on the site. It will take som,e time for them to get used to doing the pages, but it makes the place easier to pay for if there is something going on in it.
Hope everyone is well,
Maer
I want to commend Davy on his post, "Dude, Where's My Prophet?" It made me think of some of the philosophy behind parapsychology, and paranormal phenomena. The myths of the past and the story itself make a labyrynthian process of trying to find out what is real, and what is not. George Hansen and others call this "liminality," a place between places, between realities, and boundaries. When we start to do research, we find more questions, and it becomes a maze of frustration. I have started writing several articles about MESA, and will try to post them at www.mesaproject.com, and here if I can complete them. One is about all of the sites MESA has been to, another is about children having imaginary friends.

A good book can make an agreeable companion. We commit ourselves to what a writer wishes to say and worlds, experiences, insights can open to us. A master storyteller such as Argentinian author Julio Cortázar knows just how to give those everyday realities that slight half-degree twist that plunges the familiar into events both edgy and uncertain. The other evening found me thoroughly immersed in one of Cortázar's crafted *stories, and I had actually progressed a way into the scene (which takes place mainly in a hotel restaurant in Zagreb) before the uneasy thought began to dawn on me (as I'm sure the author intended it to) that not all of the characters in the scene might actually be alive. I won't give any more of the story away here, but let's run with that thought for a while.
We all tend to have an idea of the way ghosts and apparitions should look, and usually that involves something spectral, whispy, and rather sinister. And they tend to come with an appropriate gloomy setting in which do their haunting: old mansions, secluded graveyards, and the like. But supposing that a ghost is (to use what I hope is the correct term) fully-materialised? And not just that, but appearing in a setting that we would not normally associate with such things - say: at a shopping mall, or in an office somewhere?
The question has to be asked: given these conditions, would we actually know that the ‘person' that we are seeing is, in fact, a ghost? Indeed, have we all seen ghosts without even realising it? That sad-looking man in a dark suit standing silently waiting for an elevator might have been waiting there for far longer than we imagine. The woman who always stays unmoving in the shadows at the back of the store might prefer to stay in the shadows for a good reason. These thoughts in their turn invite the question: this being so, how do these ghosts among us, who interact with ‘our' world, actually see us? - Davy -
*"Encounter Within A Red Circle", from the collection "A Change Of Light", by Julio Cortázar.
Hello again, paranormalists.
I recently was invited to teach a class at Lincoln Land Community College, and I would like to thank Carl Jones for allowing me to be a part of the adventure. The class was called "Ghosts, hauntings, and the unexplained." I had way too much material in my notes, and I should have introduced MESA, but decided to show a video from "Real Ghosthunters" (1999) instead. I apologize for not talking about what Carl really wanted me to cover. I hope we can do it again next semester, or start a new meeting sometime.
I have participated in 2 investigations since the Willard Library gig in 2008. One of these was in Evansville, Indiana, and another in Champaign, Illinois. I am not going to release any data at this time, but suffice it to say there were some strange magnetic fields at both places. I must add that I did not have an experience at either one of the places.
MESA continues to do research, and we hope to investigate a place in Owensboro, KY in the next few weeks.
Thanks for tuning in.

In The Last of the Mohicans, a frosty redcoat major asks Hawkeye how he proposes to find his way through the hostile forests to the western frontier. The eternal frontiersman looks the incongruously dressed figure slowly up and down before replying with dry wit, "Well, I reckon I'll face north, then turn left kinda sudden-like, and just keep walkin'."! Hawkeye's classic answer underscores the fact that, far from being fixed and defined, the frontier was a moveable place. Two centuries or more ago, it was a shifting line on the map of continental America: a line which changed its position as it drifted ever westwards with the expansion of settlement. But where would we now find this line? To someone like myself who's a sucker for that whole frontier ethos, its echoes might be recaptured in re-enactments, or just by taking an interest in the historical items, places, and events of that era. But the fact remains that the frontier is something which belongs to a specific place at a specific time.
Or does it? The frontier was a state of mind as well as a line on the map: something which served to define what separated the settled lands from the virgin forests, the peaceable fields of the farmers from the dangers familiar to Hawkeye, James Fenimore Cooper's quintessential man of the wilderness. In short: the frontier was - and still is - the line that separates the known from the unknown.
On the previous site I related an experience that I had years ago: of getting up early one very cold and snowy English winter morning to traipse with crunching white footfalls through nearby woodlands. It was a familiar place, and I knew the paths between the trees well. I never saw another soul, but I did come across a single set of fresh well-defined footprints in the snow, which I followed along the path to a low iron gate across the way. And there, right before the gate, the footprints stopped. I mean; really actually literally vanished, as if their maker had simply ascended bodily into the void. No sign that they went to right or left, or had been retraced, and no sign in the fresh snow on the other side of the gate that they continued on. The snowy tracks simply... ceased. I kept this experience quiet for years before finally sharing it with the others here, thinking it was just one of those quirky, but unique, ‘things'. But then Becca told me that she had once gone through much the same experience. And not only that, but by chance I later came across on the web descriptions by others which made it clear that my experience of the vanishing tracks in the snow was anything but the unique one-off event that I had thought it to be. I dare now to class the experience as paranormal.
That stretch of English woodland was a familiar place to me. But right there, with me standing alone by that gate staring in mystified silence at the unexplained, going-to-nowhere footprints, the frontier shifted, and was suddenly and unexpectedly very close indeed. The invisible line which divides the known from the unknown is not some abstract, historical idea. For those of us who pursue these mysteries, we can find ourselves standing at the frontier when we least expect it, right here, right now. - Davy -
The photo above I took the day after the events told here. The path can be seen going from right to left, and the gate is about a hundred yards further to the left, at the edge of the trees. The woods are near Ewell, in Surrey county, southeast England.
Hello, friends!
Dave and I connected last night and the MESA computer is repaired. For some reason, the willard08 file was put into a different folder. The Willard Library was recorded. I have sent the file to Mike, I hope he can post it on here, eventually. Dave also repaired the analyze and e-mail for the MESA laptop.

There is a tobacconist's shop that I visit quite often. For a pipe smoker like myself, this particular shop has some real treasures to offer. There are long-stemmed churchwarden pipes of carved briar wood, with its characteristically curling warm brown grain. And others, more de Luxe, with stems of amber and bowls of white German meerschaum, carved in traditional Turk's head designs. These are beyond my modest budget, but the owner is friendly, and appreciates my interest even without my making a purchase. And there are, of course, any number of tobacco mixtures; not just in pre-packaged tins, but stacked in large apothecary-style glass jars above the counter. It's a nice place to be, for casual smoker and connoisseur alike.
The thing is, I don't know where this shop is. Because when I say that I go there quite often, what I mean is that I visit it in a recurring dream. The details of the setting are always the same, and when I awaken I remember that I've ‘visited' the shop again. But it's not any shop that I know from my waking life. Indeed, the city where I live has a tobacconist's fronting the market square renowned as being the oldest in Holland, and is still intact in the turn-of-the-20th-century style. But this ‘real' tobacconist's is also renowned for being so small - four people standing in it fill the shop! Nothing at all like the spacious interior of ‘my' tobacconist's.
So where do I ‘go' when I visit this shop of dreams? Is it just an assemblage of memories which my mind cobbles together from similar shops in other cities whose streets I have trodden? Or does it actually exist somewhere?
One even hears stories of people who have such recurring dream locations - and then, in some place where they have never before been, and to their astonishment, come across their dream-visited location in reality; a kind of ultra deja vú. Perhaps it's an ordinary - but for them, very specific - house. Or perhaps, like my own dream, it's some shop or other building. And are our dreaming selves witnessed by others? Do we appear as the dreaming ghosts of others' realities, no more substantive to them than the whisps of smoke that curl away from my pipe bowl as I write this? - Davy -
Hello friends!
We are now working on our 5th MESA laptop computer. It is an e500 Compaq Armada. It was donated to the MESA project about 1 year ago. Dave Black has successfully installed the new Kubuntu Linux program so we will be using it soon. If I have time, I may test it once in a control or haunt site before the September 27th gig. MESA will be doing some sampling in Arcadia, MO. We hope to do an investigation in and around the Arcadia Valley Academy.
Thanks again for your interest in MESA.
Big foot a HOAX! Let this be a lesson for all paranormal researchers ... Do not take your self and the work you are doing too serious. This advice goes out to all people no matter what you do in life. Fox has reported that the recent discovery of Big Foot is a Hoax, a rubber suite and that the perpetrators of the hoax has run off with the advance money given to them ... What a ride we were all taken on ... Is there really a sucker born every minute, I'm a hopeful person and this story I was hoping to be real.
Keeping an open mind is a good thing, a little skepticism is a insurance and when man shows up in the gorilla suite. We are always bound to get a good laugh. ~michael~

MESA and the Madison (Wisconsin) Researchers Into the Paranormal group recently did an investigation of the Pizza Machine and Vinegar Hill Mall, 107 West Cook St., Springfield, IL. We will post our results after analysis, hopefully sometime this week. The researchers had an excellent time at this investigation. MESA would like to thank the MRIP, Wayne Hackler, Scottie Rorek, and the crew with us that evening. We also want to give a special thanks to Jerry Neumann, Mark Schwartz, and Steven Dean for all of their help.
I should have checked my biorythms before attempting to apply patches to the Paranormal House web site ... Physical, Intellectual HIGH!!! emotional ... way low.... OOPS!.... will have to check it next time ....
My todays biorythm for ME!
Ugg boots come in so many styles and colors, it's hard to keep track of them all. Men's Uggs come in more basic, classic colors and styles, but for women, it's "anything goes" in terms of colors and styles. After all, women need a pair of shoes for every outfit, and, with Ugg Boots, you can almost do that.
Get some Uggs in ankle-high, mid-calf, and tall versions. You can find Uggs that have flat heels or more chunky and textured soles. Generally, Ugg boots are considered to be a casual footwear, meaning they go great with your favorite jeans. Pair them with a short skirt and opaque tights or a long skirt for some comfortable yet stylish wardrobe choices.
Winter, spring, summer, or fall, Ugg boots work. Being exceptionally warm, your feet stay cozy in the cold weather. Because they are made from natural sheepskin materials, the fibers breath and your feet won't get sweaty or smelly in the warm weather, either. Just about the only time you can't wear Ugg Boots is during particularly wet or muddy weather, the suede doesn't hold up as well to those conditions. Guys can look just a little more rugged wearing Ugg Boots, there's always something attractive about that look!
|

OK people. I told you last year that UGGs were awful and ugly and not to be worn with shorts and/or skirts. But did you listen? NO. For some reason, people are still wearing Ugg boots and strutting around like they're wearing Christian Louboutins. May I remind you that you aren't and you probably bought your Uggs not because they are comfy and easy to wear, but because everyone and their sorority sister has them. Let's try to be a little unique people.

I'm not sure where everyone else has been for the last few months, but I do know what I have been up to. Yes, I finally took the plunge and created my own website. It's in the form of a weblog, because that gives me the flexibility both to write and to keep adding new stuff. Having given myself a crash course in rewriting and customising HTML codes, only now do I truly appreciate something of what Michael goes through getting his own site up and running and in good working order: it's bliss when everything goes swimmingly, and misery when you overlook typing just one crucial character and the whole thing gets screwed!
Still, it's been a good hands-on learning experience, and with web design it seems that the only way to learn the steps is when you're actually on the dance floor. And to complete my webby baptism of fire, I even went through Michael's unhappy experience of getting hit by hackers just when everything was more-or-less in order, and had to reinstall everything. Grrrrr...
As to the theme of my site, anyone who recalls my 'Between Dreams and Nightmares' topic on the old site will know what to expect: examination of some of the rather darker and more quirky aspects of the world of art, although I've also taken the liberty of rewriting and republishing a couple of the blog topics which I have written about here as well.
So all my Paranormal House pals are welcome to visit me at my own 'home' (copy/paste the link below), and meet me in my guise as 'Hawkwood'. I chose as my online nom de guerre the name of the 14th century mercenary captain, the bold and ruthless Sir John. Why? Haha.. why not? You can read about this 'knight of dark renown' in my first post. Oh, and as my website is rather dark (yes, literally), it's best viewed at night with the room lights dimmed, so bring a flashlight and some stout nerves. Be advised that there are some elements of nudity in my work featured in the slideshow, although I don't think that anyone will be offended by this; it is discreetly treated. Best wishes to all, and you're welcome to drop by and visit me at:

MESA attended the first AVACON conference in Arcadia, MO. We had an excellent time. We want to thank Belinda Ache, Wayne Hackler, Scotty Rorek, and all of the attendees for a great conference. We did not get a chance to sample an area because of time constraints. Next year, we will plan on investigating a few areas over the weekend.
Big Foot real or not, I suggest you listent to the radio program and give it your best thought ... http://www.gstreaming.com/BFLive-Frontpage.html... These people or more concerned about getting there money per photo than getting the truth out ... just proves that there is a sucker born every minute....
To those who realy belive ... I think in the long run they will be disapointed...
Just my thoughts ...
Louisville Ghost Hunters Society: Spooktastic and fantastic
I'll admit it: I'm a bit of a skeptic.
Ghosts, angels, politicians - it takes convincing, tangible evidence to get me to believe anything these days. Shadows and creepy noises can always be explained. I'm more worried about the living making such noises. I'm not closed-minded to the supernatural; I've just never met a ghost.
I figured that folks behind the Louisville Ghost Hunters Society were just the people I needed to see - maybe I just hadn't been to the right haunted places around town. Prior to the meeting, I imagined what it would be like: A crystal ball in the center of a candlelit room? An elder generation of gothic people with wispy silver hair, all wide-eyed and mystical? Louisville's own Ghostbusters, with jumpsuits?
The meeting takes place at Mr. Gatti's on the Outer Loop - OK, so they aren't too weird to gather among civilians. Standing in line, I gawk like a tourist, trying to find the Ghost Hunters. Having grown up in Okolona, that Gattiland was just as I remembered - Wall Street for the pizza-downing American youth. Amid the chaos, I spot a woman with a black LGHS T-shirt disappearing into a party room. Bingo.
I slip into that same room, playing cool like I know where I'm going. At the first table is a young blonde guy sitting alone and wearing a Legend of Zelda T-shirt. I introduce myself and ask casually if this is where the Ghost Hunters are meeting.
"That's what I'm here for," he says softly. "But it's my first time."
Perfect. I drop my enormous yellow purse in the chair diagonal from his and venture off for my cheese pizza and Big Red.
When I return, James (the blonde) has been joined by his roommate, Greg, also a first-timer. Over our pizza, we chat like old friends. Greg and James live in Indiana with their three cats. Well, they only have to feed two of them. The third is a ghost.
James and Greg both swear they've seen it scamper by and disappear, and can hear it meowing from another room, even when both of the live cats are in the same room. According to Greg, the former tenants had several cats, and surely at least one had used up its nine lives while residing there.
These two have each had a few other ghostly encounters, but neither are enthusiasts. They just want to see what this is all about.
Magically, the television that was playing the Sci-Fi channel (appropriately enough) shuts off, and LGHS Vice President Dale Clark commands the room. The meeting is formal, business-like. Clark discusses matters like active members' concerns, money, transportation for events, etc. I am a little unclear on this "active member" business, but I learn that the LGHS has a system for all they do, and they occasionally take trips to historical sites. The meeting does not include members sharing experiences of phantom blood on their bathroom mirrors and mysterious ice spots in their hallways. Clark is darkly sarcastic through the whole business spiel, which I appreciate.
After the official meeting is adjourned, members stick around and mingle in various cliques. It doesn't look like I am going to get the shit scared out of me, and for this I am fairly disappointed. I part ways with James and Greg, and approach Clark to see what's up.
He explains that the Ghost Hunters are a worldwide organization with about 50 active members and volunteers in Louisville. Active members conduct investigations - they go to a "haunted" house or building and find the source of odd happenings, such as doors slamming or lights flickering. Prior to the investigation, they conduct research to find any significant historical aspects of the site. Once inside, they use audio, video and electromagnetic technology to find the source of the unexplainable. They have found lots of electrical shorts, probably averting house fires. He says they remain skeptical but open-minded while investigating; what they do is scientific, not metaphysical. According to Clark, 99 percent of the investigations result in a legitimate, non-paranormal explanation.
"It's hard to prove a feeling," he explains.
But what about that other 1 percent? I ask if there is any site in Louisville that, by their standards, is haunted. His eyes light up. The American Standard building, formerly a warehouse for manufacturing bathroom and kitchen fixtures, is the one. He describes footsteps, being chased and ethereal voices picked up by their equipment - all from an inexplicable source. I ask if we could go there, but he says it's not safe and I can't be authorized. Bummer.
But here's the fun part: The University of Louisville just bought that building and plans to convert it into student apartments, in its effort to make campus more of a "college town" (snort), a project that should be completed by 2009. Glorious. I'll have to check this thing out once it's finished. Maybe get a place there.
Jane Mattingly will be a junior at the University of Louisville in the fall and enjoys photography, coffee and the inherent skepticism only a millennial has.
The very latest - and welcome - addition to Davy's library is a newly-translated edition of the Epic of Gilgamesh. What set me thinking is the fact that this particular edition is a modest paperback. Think about it: this Sumerian epic poem, first written around four thousand years ago, is the oldest known real story that we have. And what a story - of friendship, seduction, loss and death, all written down in cuneiform script (that's the spikey writing that looks like chicken's feet!) on clay tablets in various versions scattered throughout different museums. And although it's not complete, it's still complete enough to form a coherent story powerful enough to have its echoes in history - most famously in the part of the story which scholars agree almost certainly formed the inspiration for the later Noah's Ark story in Genesis. Reconstructing and translating the epic anew is an achievement in itself, and I've mentioned Gilgamesh before on my previous Bigfoot thread when I wrote of our ‘wild, other Self' out there in the forest, as mirrored in the character of the wild man Enkidu, whom the hero Gilgamesh befriends.
So here in my hands is an astonishingly preserved and very portable version of the world's oldest story, known from clay tablets coated in the dust of history. How could it's original unknown author ever have imagined such a thing? But I have mentioned the echoes of history, and these echoes can be of a darker kind. Ancient Sumer - the cradle of human civilization, where writing and early sciences such as astronomy first flourished - lay in what is now Iraq. By coincidence I had also recently come across on the Web a partial catalog of treasures that were looted, and many of which are still missing, from the ransacked Baghdad Museum. Some of the pieces are so famous that I remembered seeing pictures of them from my art school days. Human civilization began in Iraq. Several millennia later, that very land has tragically become known as ‘the most dangerous place in the world'. With the ancient yet timeless story of the hero Gilgamesh now making it into a paperback edition, what have we learned during the intervening millennia? If Sumer was where our collective cultural identity began, what do the smashed and empty museum display cases and suicide-bombed streets and markets of today's Sumer - the country we call Iraq - say about our collective cultural progress? I wish I had more answers. - Davy -
(The Epic of Gilgamesh, translated with an introduction by Andrew George, published by Penguin Classics.)
An unexplained knock, a bell ringing off in the distance, the sudden shatter of glass from an exploding ashtray ... what is that makes us believe in "anything"? Life is an illusion and the topic of Criss Angel has been mentioned in our forums. This is an interesting twist on paranormal research. We look for ghosts and believe that they are looking for us... Why do we believe that? What is it that is so imbedded in our gene pool that that governs this? Is it an act of faith? What makes us believe that they are looking at all? I have mentioned the thread theory and much about the universe and this thread passing threw each and every one of us... do we already know because that's the way it is. Is it imbedded in our natural instinct of the universe? Ask yourself why am I looking for ghosts and you might find the answer as to why they are seeking you. ~michael~

Follow me as I go on my first ghost hunt. Actual notes I took! This was a trip that pre-dates the construction of MESA (a haunt detection computer system: Multi.Energies.Sensor.Array) A project I assisted with and worked with for years....
11-19-1991 Osh-Gosh Wisconsin: The Opera-House Starting at 8:00pm
- We just finished a tour of the opera house. Are tour guide was Scottie .... A good Fellow! Comes across as being honest. (I comment to myself) I need to note some odd things that take place.
- As we left the prop room I caught a light "left eye" went from marks left side into an air or heating grate. Note I was running the video cam (did not catch it on video) - stomach went to my throat only way to describe feeling.
- We where going up stairs when I heard a door slam shut off in the distance.
- I found metal railing on the other side of wall... light out of left eye might have come from it ...???
- 9:58 Tim & Scottie (before finish tour and before coming to safe room) Saw a light come on and streak out - Stage Left - (Tim's reaction and orb caught on tape)
- 10:00 pm Tim and Scottie find News paper where it shouldn't be ... ???
- I can hear a rattling ting sound from the furnace
- Jim Houran seems to be chasing sounds in the basement. The feeling I had before seems to be leaving this spot. (were I saw the light)
- 10:16 pm we are getting ready to start actual testing: seems kind of interesting.
- Entry by Tim: door heard - thud - heard by all people (harte&Scottie) on car seat coach by equipment in small pile in basement on small 3 stairs.
- 10:56 Mark heard sounds from up stairs
- 10:59 for future reference it seems as if we are being made to chase sounds (Jim Houran working up the crowd) I suggested periodic silent periods were we are away from the equipment) eventually we moved to compete lock-down by or near the MESA equipment ... NO PEOPLE!
- IDEA... Next time bring "cable tester" and 150 ft of cable shorted and 150 ft of cable open. I will test cable readings against magnet to get noise level readings.
- 11:43 pm Jim hears foot steps behind him. He thought I was behind him. He went upstairs turned around and I was no were to be found... STRANGE???
- IDEA... we took one video tape should use two as control.
- 11:57 pm Light in main seating area of opera house goes on / off then on. We inspect: video tape light check to see if it's all the way in.
- 12:07 pm Light goes off capture on film.
- NOTE! Load clicking nose as If someone is turning on off breaker.
- Found old newspaper page wrinkled up... date 11-19-1978 found at top of back stairs by service door leading out side... Paper was not there on tour.
- NOTE the date on the paper was the same date as our investigation 11-19-1991 exactly 13 year difference.
- I will inspect the cat walk ... Light was off on tour we could have just missed the news paper.
- Scottie was the fist person to note the date
• i. IDEA - News paper could have been a plant ... just a feeling
-
- IDEA - need to create flow chart to keep order in investigations
- 12:30 Light in main seating area keeps going on and off.
- Feeling - I do find it interesting that Scottie runs a comedy club.
- Our light going off and on...
- Note - I've filmed several areas of shoddy wiring could be causing the light to go on and off.
- 12:57pm Checked cat walk for more news papers.
- Scottie noted that 3 lights on sound board on normally on...???
- 1:00 pm ROUND TABLE meeting to discuss what we have found or feelings what we may have seen or heard. We focus our attention to stage left and things get quite... we hear what sounds like foot steps several of the investigators raise camera and start taking pictures.
- 1:39 pm Tims tape deck stopped working??? He thinks batteries are dead.
- NOTE! Good deal of quite time is going on... FINALY!
- 1:47 pm Scottie has to leave and do some work at club
For a short time at this point I work on drawing the stage out on paper and talk with Tim about his sighting of an ORB on the stage ... he saw it come out of wall and travel across the stage... (I did capture this on film)
ENDING NOTES: Observations
This whole trip seemed odd. Are group leader Jim Houran whom set this trip up as a model for future tests came across as being very disorganized and unprofessional and discredited himself when he made out with the only female in the group. (I caught them in the act, You might say with his pants down) I find it hard to believe that he takes any of this serous and I felt more like he was more interested in our behavior than anything else.
Note: Jim did not bring paper nor did he use his own tape or video deck???
At first things seemed chaotic... I found it quite interesting that Scottie lead us on a tour of the opera house with the lights "OUT" (WHY?). Scottie was the fist to point out the door slam made a point that we all heard it. For the next hour after the door slam we were lead to a place of chaotic, disorganized investigating with no structure.
I thought for future use I would suggest a Safe place .... This could be a place or room were we could hang out in and a separate place to run equipment i.e. video, computers, microphones etc... to monitor the environment. There should also be a time set when we return 2, 4, 6 hours to pick up equipment. The equipment and all data should be analyzed off site as to not be influenced by the affected area.
I also suggest that people are restricted to do their job and their job only and work collectively off site. This would keep influences from other group members down but not totally eliminated.
I also suggest that written logs be kept by all members w/times and events cataloged. This goes along with previous suggestion that we not point out events as they happen but compare notes off site at a different time and place. This would create a more accurate and collective way to pinpoint true actual sounds, sightings and feelings that took place.
Multifrequency Energy Sensory A rray (MESA) Project members include Timothy M. Harte, David L. Black, Michael T. Hollinshead.
We are a multidisciplinary group dedicated to the scientific study of haunt phenomena and poltergeist-like phenomena. We have designed a computer system that measures physical energies in places where people experience these phenomena. Haunt phenomena have been described as visual, auditory, and olfactory hallucinations; sensed presence (being touched or the feeling of not being alone); erratic functioning of mechanical or electrical equipment; unexplained strong emotional episodes; strange animal responses; and object movement.
The MESA system has recorded anomalous energies at over 150 sites in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Tennessee. Previous research in haunt phenomena suggests that fluctuating electromagnetic, magnetic, and other energies may be a culprit in some types of haunts.
Introduction
Geomagnetic activity (static magnetic fields) has been blamed for hallucinatory episodes, especially during REM sleep (see Randall and Randall, 1991). This energy is primarily from the Earth, but also mediated at times by energy from the sun, as well.
Other researchers think the sleep states themselves may be the cause of the hallucinatory behavior (Blackmore, 1998; Nickell, 1997; Persinger, 1993). If the effects of EMFs are this powerful, the reports of the phenomena should be prevalent within the population. Housing, offices, and other places where human activity near large transformer stations, power lines, and fault lines may play a key role in studies of hallucinatory episodes (Sisir & Millis, 1986).
This phenomena includes apparitions (Konig, Fraser & Powell, 1981; Halgren, Walter, Cherlow, & Crandall, 1978; Persinger, Tiller, & Koren, 2000). At times, people experience seeing forms, shapes, but at times the experiences are mistaken for seeing a real person. Sensed presences, which include the feeling of being watched, not alone, or being stared at (Smith, Choy & Munro, 1986; Smith & Best, 1989; Halgren et al., 1978; Persinger, Tiller, & Koren, 2000; Ruttan, Persinger, & Koren, 1990; Sheldrake, 1998).
Sleep paralysis has been recorded in cases where high or fluctuating EMFs are present (Persinger, 1999, communication with Roll & Nichols, 2000). Depression, aggression, or other heightened moods or states of consciousness (DeLorge & Grissett, 1977; Persinger, 1974b) can also be present. Tactile sensations such as being touched, or tingling sensations (somesthesia) can be produced by EMFs, or in the presence of an electrostatic field, or by direct electrical stimulation of the brain by complex magnetic fields (Persinger, 1999, communication to Roll & Nichols, 2000).
Acoustic or aural phenomena such as "footsteps," knocking, human voices, or one's name being called out have also been experienced when these fluctuating EMFs are present (Burke, 1986, p. 264). These subjective auditory experiences could be caused by electrical stimulation of the auditory cortex, or to the induction of localized electric seizures within the limbic system (Persinger, 1989; 1988; 1985).
Erratic functioning or malfunctioning of electrical or mechanical equipment has been reported in sites where fluctuating EMFs are experienced (Burke, 1986). A magneto-restrictive process may deform the ferrite components in electrical equipment, causing light bulbs to blow, and telephones to ring or malfunction. Cold spots and spontaneous fires have been known to be experienced (Persinger, 1974a). Sudden drops in temperature might be caused by a voltage increase between two dielectric plates, e.g., slabs of limestone below a site that are separated by a thermoelectric material (the Peltier effect, Persinger, 1974a).
Floating globes, or orbs of light, also known as "ghost lights," have been recorded on 35mm, Polaroid, Kodak infrared, and black and white Tri-X film (Radin & Roll, 1994; Roll, Moody, & Radin, 1996; Roll & Nichols, 1999, 2000); also see Internet web sites http://www.prairieghosts.com or http://www.ghostweb.com. Both professional and amateur photographers and investigators, at some sites, have also recorded other anomalous images.
Strange responses by animals have been recorded, which could be high frequency sound, inaudible to humans, and could be produced by anomalous magnetic fields. These fields can also directly affect the hippocampus and amygdaloidal complex of the brain, and the temporolimbic system (the most electrically sensitive structures in the brain) and evoke affective responses in animals, and humans as well (Persinger, 1985,1988,1989). Movement of objects such as doors, windows, rocking chairs, suspended lamps, and pictures on the walls of sites have been known to occur.
Several researchers have measured EMFs, GMFs, and ion concentrations in sites where there have been anomalous activities, EMFs, and strange psychological reports (Radin & Roll, 1994; Roll & Nichols, 1999, 2000). Usually, anomalous EMFs, GMFs, or high ion concentrations may have been the culprit in those cases.
Computers continue to be used to investigate EMFs in the field (Harte, Black, Hollinshead, 1999). This first two authors have co-designed a laptop computer system, known as Multi-Energy Sensor Array (MESA; Harte, Black, & Hollinshead, 1999; Harte Black, Hollinshead, and Mitchell, 2001) that will continue to be utilized in these studies. It is a portable, laptop computer system designed to measure low-frequency electromagnetic field and geomagnetic field fluctuations in different environments. This system presently measures infrared (IR), visible (Vis), and ultraviolet (UV) light; geomagnetic (0-0.5 Hz) static electromagnetic fields; 60 Hz dynamic electromagnetic fields from wiring, vibration, and galvanic skin response of a human subject.
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and static geomagnetic fields (GMFs) continue to be linked to psychological complaints in buildings, and other places. They are also being studied for their links to cancer (www.mcw.ed/gcrc/cop/static-fields-cancer-faq; Milham, 1979; Mevissan, et.al. 1993; Jankovic, et.al, 1994).
Allegedly, there is a higher incidence of lymphoreticular tumors, an increase in growth of chemically-induced tumors, and possible adverse effects on fetal development (Narra, 1996). There are also studies that have shown a higher incidence of childhood leukemia (Doll, et. Al., 1992; Angelillo & Villari, 1999), brain cancer, and testicle cancer (Washburn, 1994; Kheifets, 2001). Neuroblastoma (Jones, Shih, Thurston, Ware, & Cole, 1993) remains another cancer thought to be caused by electromagnetic fields, along with breast cancer (Gammon, et. al., 1998) and prostate cancer (Goldberg, 1998).
The results of these studies remain problematic (Brainard, 1999) because of different levels of exposure, measurement rules used, and the times studied. The interaction of these energetic fields may also need to be studied to see their effects (Savitz, 1993). There may be underlying patterns in the interactions that could make EMFs more dangerous than one frequency or type of EMF alone. EMFs are also being studied as possible beneficial resources for human health issues (Browner, Jupiter, Levine, & Trafton, 1998), such as facial nerve regeneration (Byers, Clark, & Thompson, 1998), arthritis (www.ama-assn.org/med-sci/csa), multiple sclerosis (www.intergate.bc.ca/enermed), and migraine headaches (Lappin, 1998).
MESA is fitted with a data acquisition board that contains eight channels, and up to eight sensors can be utilized in a sampling period. The data are then analyzed directly on the laptop computer, and displayed as graphs. Readers are referred to previous articles (Houran, Lange, & Black, 1998; Harte, Black, & Hollinshead, 1999) for technical specifications not mentioned here. MESA has been used to measure and record electromagnetic energy in approximately 60 sites, both where anomalous activity has occurred, and in control sites, or sites where there has not been anomalous activity. Preliminary findings indicate changes in the static magnetic (geomagnetic) fields may cause people to label experiences as anomalous, or "paranormal." This may occur when a person walks from one room to another, and fluctuations, or changes in the geomagnetic fields cause the effects.
More time, resources, and funds are needed to do this research. The experimenters will continue to study sites where fluctuating electromagnetic energy occurs, and also measure control sites. We hope to develop data for scientific publishing in peer-reviewed journals (such as Behavior Research Methods, Instruments and Computers, Perceptual and Motor Skills, Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, and others). The researchers are also making a documentary film with the local Evansville, Indiana PBS television station, WNIN Channel 9.
Methodology
This study will be a concentrated effort to study the electromagnetic and magnetic energy in different sites, while also reporting what people have experienced at each site. Each site will be rated and chosen for 1) its reported psychological effects, the quality and magnitude of effects, and 3) the lack of reported psychological effects. The researchers will be blind to the conditions of each site. A simple checklist and extensive interview will be conducted on each of the experients, and these will be checked with sites and locations within the site to study the phenomena. Psychological and/or parapsychological effects to be studied will be:
1) Apparitions: The sighting of a shadow, mist, fog, or anomalous shape or form, of even a person that might be mistaken for real.
2) Sensed presences: Subjective feelings which include the feeling of being watched (Sheldrake, 1998), or not alone in a room.
3) Sleep paralysis or other disturbances: In sleep paralysis a person may wake with a feeling of immobility and fear. The experiences tend to occur before the onset of normal dreams and may be facilitated by recent changes in brain function from closed head injury or insufficient blood supply. The experiences are similar to dream-like states (identified by specific EEG patterns) where normal subjects experience body weakness, or decreased desire to move, when complex magnetic fields are applied across the brain. The paresis is frequently associated with the feeling of a sentient presence (Roll & Nichols, 2000).
4) Depression and aggression : Depression, heightened aggression, fear, sadness, and other unexplained sudden onset of emotions have been reported in both humans and animals by exposure to complex magnetic fields (DeLorge & Grissett, 1977; Persinger, 1974b). This has been known to occur at certain frequencies (Tandy & Lawrence, 1998).
5) Tactile sensations: The feeling of being touched, poked, pushed, scratched, tripped, or tingling in the limbs.
6) Acoustic phenomena: This would include hearing phenomena such as "footsteps," knocking, human voices, or one's name being called out have also been experienced in places where there are fluctuating electromagnetic or magnetic fields.
7) Erratic functioning or malfunctioning of electrical or mechanical equipment has occurred at some sites. This would include electrical equipment such as VCRs, microwave ovens, telephones, and light bulb failures.
8) Cold spots: These are reported and occur in a transient fashion, usually moving around, but can also be stationery.
9) Floating lights: Or other anomalous lighting effects have been reported.
10) Strange responses: By pets or animals at a site . This would include an animal not going into a certain room, or showing fear, aggression, or another unusual response.
11) Object movement: This would include an object moving from one spot to another, or setting an object down only to find it is not there upon returning.
Sites will be chosen before the experiment, by an independent trained rater, and then randomized. The experimenters will be blind to each site. The researchers hope to measure about one site a week, depending on available time. Each site will be measured for approximately one hour. The checklist (see Appendix A) will be filled out during interviews of the experients by the trained rater at each site. A simple floor plan will be drawn, and experients will report where the psychological complaints have been reported. The experimenters will then measure two (2) sites within the target or control site. One will be a target site, where psychological complaints have been reported; the other site will be measured for control purposes. Two sites will be measured at control sites as well, but the researchers will be blind to this condition. The energetic data will be reported in charts, one for each sensor.
MESA is a laptop computer system specifically designed to measure electromagnetic fields in environments (see Houran, Lange & Black, 1998; Harte, Black & Hollinshead, 1999). Each site will be measured for at least one hour, and then data will be analyzed directly on the laptop computer. Each site will also be documented using an infrared surveillance camera fitted to a VHS recorder, Sony 8mm Night Vision video camera fitted with a #67 filter, regular VHS camera, and 35mm still-picture cameras. A PZM (pressure zone microphone) will also be fitted to one of the 8mm cameras to record anomalous audio activity. The results will be reported in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, such as The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, and also to several popular magazines, such as Psychology Today. The results will also be published in several large newspapers, if possible. Each grantor will receive a final report of the findings of this study.
Statistical analyses will be performed, using SPSS (Statistics Package for the Social Sciences), or Windows Excel. If further statistical data analysis is desired, a data-mining capability is within the reach of a signal processing software package designed by the consultant, David L. Black.
Hypotheses
At places where there are changing, or fluctuating electromagnetic or geomagnetic energy, there will also be more psychological complaints or negative reports and symptomatology. This study will be a significant pilot study to investigate how electromagnetic and magnetic fields affect the human brain/mind continuum. It will add to the body of knowledge by studying many different types of environments, and to match psychological complaints with electromagnetic and geomagnetic activity. Environments are important to study in terms of public health, both physical and psychological. This study will provide scientists, researchers, health practitioners, industrial and office designers, and the public in how to make environments they live and work in healthier. It may also provide new ways of studying EMFs, GMFs, and how they affect people.
